Avondale Anima Chenin Blanc 2012

I have a feeling Avondale in Paarl is on the brink of hitting the big time. Organic and biodynamic farming principles combined with the best that modern science is resulting in some particularly characterful stuff in the bottle. I nominated the white blend Cyclus 2011 (R210 a bottle) for 5 Stars in the current edition of Platter’s and the recently released Anima Chenin Blanc 2012 (R168) is also smart.

It has a subtle nose of lime through peach plus a yeasty top note. The palate is intense but balanced – good fruit delineation, fresh acidity and a touch of spice. Not too clean-cut thanks to a bit of phenolic grip on the finish. A wine of real interest.

Score: 90/100.
