Hope Marguerite Chenin Blanc from Bot River is much revered but right now it’s the newly released standard label can’t be beat for sheer bang for buck. Tasting notes and ratings as follows:
Beaumont Chenin Blanc 2022
Price: R140
Fermented using a combination of cultured and natural yeasts in concrete and stainless steel tanks. The nose is enticing with notes of floral fragrance, dried herbs, guava and citrus while the palate is clean and fresh – a good core of fruit and lively acidity precede a dry finish. “Pure deliciousness” reads the back label and that’s exactly what this is.
CE’s rating: 90/100.
Beaumont Hope Marguerite 2021
Price: R395
Grapes from the two oldest blocks of Chenin Blanc on the property, planted in 1974 and 1978 respectively. Spontaneously fermented and matured for 10 months in older 400-litre barrels. The nose shows subtle notes of pear, white peach, lemon, dried herbs and some flinty reduction while the palate is relatively lean with fresh acidity and a saline finish. It’s currently restrained to the point of austere but by the same token there’s the sense that time in bottle will only do it good.
CE’s rating: 92/100.

I think the review is spot on. Christian summed it up perfectly for this vintage. Wait another 6 months to a year and see how it opens up. It’s a classic hope vintage.
