Beyerskloof Diesel Pinotage 2016
By Christian Eedes, 7 December 2018
Do “lesser” vintages sometimes make for better wines? 2015 is much hyped but this vintage of Diesel Pinotage from Beyerskloof in Stellenbosch seemed overdone (alcohol: 15.05%) whereas the 2016 vintage, while not exactly light-bodied, is much more successful.
Matured for 18 months in 100% new oak, the nose shows a floral top note before raspberry, cassis, vanilla, cinnamon and cocoa. The palate is rich and flavourful – there’s plenty of sweet fruit upfront but the finish is long and savoury (alcohol as advertised on the bottle: 14.5%). Not for sissies but this has a drinkability that the 2015 lacked. Price: R750 a bottle.
Editor’s rating: 93/100.
