BLANKbottle Jimmy White Verdelho 2017
By Christian Eedes, 12 April 2019
BLANKbottle, as made by Pieter Walser, stand out on the market place as being utterly unconventional – the array of wines are ever-changing and Walser gives them whimsical names and eye-catching packaging if non-traditional labels (he was the winner of the Grand Prix at the inaugural Wine Label Design Awards). Tasting notes and ratings for two of his current releases as follows:
BLANKbottle Jimmy White Verdelho 2017
Named after a Suzuki Jimny as used for dune racing by the Wellington farmer who supplies the grapes in question. Lovely aromatics of citrus, stone fruit, herbs and spice. The palate displays concentrated fruit, a great line of acidity and a pithy finish. Intricate, balanced and long. Wine Cellar price: R210 a bottle.
Editor’s rating: 93/100.
BLANKbottle My Koffer Cinsault 2017
From Breedekloof Cinsault, a homage to Tassenberg. Fynbos, flowers and red fruit on the nose. The palate is juicy and fresh with powdery, nicely grippy tannins. Most approachable as you would expect from the variety. Wine Cellar price: R240 a bottle.
Editor’s rating: 89/100.
