BLANKBottle Sigh of Relief 2015
By Christian Eedes, 6 April 2018
What would Cabernet Franc vines, previously mistaken for Merlot, do on being correctly identified? They’d give a sigh of relief and hence the name of this wine from maverick Pieter Walser.
The wine is mostly Cab Franc “with bits of Malbec and Cab Sauvignon” all from the Helderberg. The nose is shy but notes of red fruit, dried herbs and a certain dustiness can be discerned. The palate is medium-bodied with fresh acidity and fine tannins. There’s a tomato cocktail quality to drinking it, while the finish is pleasantly austere. Elegant and harmonious. Woolworths price: R219.99 a bottle.
Editor’s rating: 90/100.
