Bloemcool is a range of more “esoteric” wines from Fairview, two new wines from Piekenierskloof farm Berg en Dal now available.
Bloemencool Berg en Dal Haasbek 2021
Price: R250
From the oldest block of Grenache Blanc in the country although still not yet eligible for certified status with the Old Vine Project. Called “Haasbek”, which literally translates as “rabbit’s mouth”, on account of the prominent gaps in the vineyard. Fermented and matured for 10 months in a clay pot. Somewhat neutral on the nose although elusive notes of apple, stone fruit and earth can be detected. The palate is broad and gently grippy, this being a wine that is more about texture. One for the geeks.
CE’s rating: 91/100.
Bloemcool Berg en Dal Maanskyn Steen 2021
Price: R250
From a certified heritage vineyard planted in 1962. Fermented and matured for 10 months in stainless steel tank. Pear, peach and apple plus hints of honeysuckle and dried herbs on the nose while the palate displays wonderfully concentrated fruit matched by a great line of acidity, before a finish that is long and quinine-like in its dryness. Beautifully judged, the respect for the vineyard from the winemaking team is obvious.
CE’s rating: 95/100.

Haasbek = gap toothed. Not rabbit mouthed.
