Ploegperd is a white blend under Fairview’s experimental label Bloemcool, grapes from Piekenierskloof. The Palomino from a 1974 vineyard is the majority component in the 2022 vintage of Ploegperd at 55% followed by Chenin Blanc from a 1962 vineyard at 30% and Grenache Blanc from a 1994 vineyard at 15%. Maturation, meanwhile, took place in a combination of old oak, clay pots and tank and the results is once again a remarkably pleasurable wine.
Pear, white peach, lime, flowers and herbs plus a little flinty reduction on the nose while the palate shows pure fruit and fresh acidity before a pithy finish. Tight and foscused, light bodied (alcohol is just 12%) but full of flavour. Price: R300 a bottle.
