On the pull.

The visionary undertaking that is the Old Vine Project continues to result in some wonderful wines, the latest to appear on the scene being the Ploegperd 2018 under the avant-garde Bloemcool label from Fairview.

Grapes from Piekenierskloof, it’s a blend of 65% Palomino, 21% Chenin Blanc and 14% Grenache Blanc – the Chenin (planted in 1962*) and the Palomino (planted in 1974) are both certified as heritage vineyards; the Grenache Blanc (planted in 1994) has not yet reached 35 years and thus cannot be certified yet and it’s for this reason that this component is limited to less than 15% of the final blend (even so, it’s is the oldest block of the variety in the country).

The Palomino was fermented and matured for nine months in tank, the Chenin in old oak and the Grenache in tank for six months and then three months in oak. On the nose, a hint of flinty reduction before pear, white peach, lime and dried herbs – all very subtle and elusive. The palate is relatively light bodied (alcohol: 13.8%) with arresting acidity and super-dry, intensely savoury finish – it delivers that great combination of being both thought-provoking but also totally smashable. A steal at R170 a bottle.

Editor’s rating: 95/100.

*This review originally stated that the Chenin Blanc was planted in 1973 but records subsequently came to light that showed it to have been established in 1962.
