Boerejive Vers. 1 Sauvignon Blanc 2015

Light on its feet.

Emile van der Merwe, assistant to winemaker Matthew Copeland at Agter-Paarl property Vondeling, has made a small batch of own-label Blanc Fumé 2015. Called Boerejive after his late father’s first poetry collection, the grapes are from a block of Sauvignon Blanc planted on Vondeling in 1984.

Juice was inoculated in tank before being transferred to two old barrels to finish fermentation, maturation lasting 10 months. It’s a subtle and quite delicate wine. A floral top note before notes of citrus, white peach and a hint of pineapple. Quite light bodied with moderate acidity, I liked how it kept drawing me back to the glass. Price: R75 a bottle.

#WinemagRating: 88/100.
