By , 14 June 2017

Syrah du Monde is an annual French competition focusing on the famous Rhône variety, 372 entries from 26 countries received this year. South Africa won five of 33 gold medals, two of these going to wines from Robertson, tasting notes and ratings as follows:

Bon Courage Inkara Shiraz 2014

Heavyweight contender.

Bon Courage Inkara Shiraz 2014
Price: R165
Gets the full treatment with time in both 100% new American and French oak. Intensely aromatic with notes of black and blue fruit, some smoky character, pepper and spice. Rich and full – dense fruit, coated acidity and smooth tannins. Ultra-ripe but still manages to be savoury on the finish, this makes a huge impact.

Editor’s rating: 91/100.

Robertson Constitution Road Shiraz 2013
Price: R171
Another hugely ambitious wine coming in at 14.84% alcohol and matured for 36 months in 100% new French oak. The nose is attractive enough with notes of red and black fruit, vanilla, pink pepper and scrub. The palate, however, is not as convincing – while full, it’s hollow on the mid-palate, lacks drive and detail, and the finish appears hot.

Editor’s rating: 87/100.
