Boplaas Cape Vintage 2017

Neat and tidy.

There’s a expectation that wines made in a Vintage Port style should be rich and deep but what’s striking about the Cape Vintage 2017 from Boplaas is how pure and relatively light it is. From Touriga Nacional, Tinta Barocca and Souzao, it was matured for 12 months in large barrels. The nose has top notes of flowers and fynbos before red, black and blue fruit plus spice. Great fruit definition, fresh acidity and nicely grippy thanks to firm but fine tannins. Not cloyingly sweet or too dense but rather beautifully balanced – alcohol is 17% and residual sugar is 95.6g/l. Already a pleasure to drink but should mature with benefit. Price: R124 a bottle.

Editor’s rating: 90/100.
