Boplaas Cape Vintage Reserve Port 2006

By , 14 July 2023

When the Cape Vintage Reserve from Boplaas in Caltizdorp rated 5 Stars in the May 2010 issue of Wine Magazine, it cost R150 a bottle. It’s drinking beautifully now and if you were sensible enough to have bought a bottle on release, you’ll be interested to know that it’s still available from the cellar at R1 200 a bottle – that’s an appreciation in value of 700 per cent!

From Touriga Nacional, Tinta Barocca and Souzao sourced from both Calitzdorp and Stellenbosch, it was matured for 12 months in Portuguese “pipes”. The nose is extremely fragrant with top notes of flowers, herbs and tea leaf before red and black berries plus spice. The palate is not too imposing or monolithic yet still intense – great fruit definition, lovely vitality and a super-dry finish. A fortified that combines succulence and texture to great effect (alc: 18.6%). “Drink now through 2050” suggests the Boplaas website and who’s to say that’s wrong?

CE’s rating: 96/100.
