Boplaas Gamka Branca 2016
By Christian Eedes, 5 December 2017
Boplaas continues its fascination with all things Portuguese having recently addes Verdelho to its Calitzdorp plantings. This variety is included in a new top-end white blend, the other components being Chardonnay (60%), Viognier, Grenache Blanc and Chenin Blanc, these sourced variously from Elgin, Stellenbosch and the Swartland.
The wine shows an array of citrus (naartjie, lemon and grapefruit ) as well as white peach and fresh herbs plus a hint of leesy complexity, the wine having matured for nine months in older oak. The palate displays very concentrated fruit and punchy acidity before a saline finish. It’s a substantial wine but equally not without nuance. Price: R177 a bottle.
Editor’s rating: 93/100.
