Cape enough?

Should a Cape White Blend contain a mandatory amount of Chenin Blanc?  If so, do the minimum and maximum quantities need to be specified? The 2018 vintage of Gamka Branca Reserve 2018 from Boplaas contains just 8% Chenin Blanc in addition to 31% Viognier, 28% Chardonnay, 25% Grenache Blanc, 6% Roussanne and 2% Verdelho (sourced variously from Elgin, Klein Karoo, Stellenbosch and Swartland) and as rightly or wrongly was therefore not eligible for inclusion in the recent Prescient Cape White Blend Report which stipulates such wines contain a Chenin component of more than 15% and less than 85%.

It remains a smart wine, however. The nose is pretty with top notes of flowers and herbs before citrus, peach and apple plus a little spice. The palate is light-bodied with pure fruit, bright acidity and a saline finish. Altogether rather elegant. Price: R150 a bottle.

CE’s rating: 92/100.

Elegant describes it well. A lovely thoughtful drink on its own, but fabulously versatile with food, complementing a wide spectrum of dishes. Classy wine making.
