The “Douro Boys” are a band of winemakers who in the last decade or so have gained international renown for themselves making excellent table wines in the Portuguese region better known for its fortifieds and now the likes of Calitzdorp cellar Boplaas locally are trying to emulate them.
The Gamka Family Reserve 2013 is the second release of a blend featuring predominantly Portuguese varieties, the blend in this instance consisting of 41% Touriga Francesca, 39% Shiraz, 15% Touriga Nacional and 5% Tinta Barocca, the wine matured for 12 months in French oak, 100% new.
On the nose, some reduction before red and black berries plus a herbal note and some spice. The palate is big and bold with sweet, juicy fruit, bright acidity and supple tannins. Hearty fare, in short. Price: R175 a bottle.
