Roars with flavour.
The Gamka Family Reserve from Boplaas is a Calitzdorp-Stellenbosch mash-up which sees Portuguese varieties blended with Shiraz, the 2015 consisting of 36% Touriga Nacional and 25% Tinta Barocca combined with 39% Shiraz, the wine matured for 12 months in French oak, 100% new.
The nose shows red and black fruit, geranium, scrub, some earthiness and spice. It’s none too heavy, despite a not immodest alcohol of 14.5%, and possesses good freshness as well as a winning sense of crunchiness to the tannins. If the previous vintage 2013 was all about burly charm, this has a touch more refinement. Price: R175 a bottle.

Please could you clarify what ‘scrub’ is.
It is a term you often refer to.

Hi Bernard, I use “scrub” in much the same sense as “fynbos” or “garrigue”, the intention being to evoke the aromas of the bushy plants that grow in a Mediterranean climate, more fragrant and not quite as green as herbs/herbal/herbaceous might imply.
