How was Reenen Borman of Stellenbosch property Boschkloof going to follow up on his stellar 2021? Well, the waiting’s over. The 2022 is about to be released.

As with 2021, two-thirds underwent whole-bunch fermentation before maturation in concrete, one-third destemmed and matured in 100% new oak barrels.

The nose shows a top note of floral perfume before red and black berries, orange, pepper, vanilla and cinnamon. The palate is medium-bodied with fresh acidity and carefully managed tannins, the finish intensely dry. A compelling wine, as we’ve come to expect, but not quite as well conceived as the 2021 – less fruit weight, less structure overall. Alcohol: 13.5%.

CE’s rating: 95/100.

Hi Gareth. Production of the Epilogue 2022 is still around 4000 bottles. But Boschkloof only sells about 400 bottles direct to consumer, the rest goes to trade locally and also exported.

I understand that total production this year was only 400 bottles, down from approx 4000 last year, if I remember correctly. Was this intentional, or the result of harvest conditions or something else I wonder?
