For all the hype around the 2025 vintage, things appear to have gone rather well in the Skurfberg in 2024. I found more linearity and verve than usual in that year’s Sadie Family District Series, and the same is true of Botanica Mary Delany from Ginny Povall (price: R695 a bottle).

The nose shows peach, citrus and herbs, with subtle notes of lanolin and earth. The palate is concentrated with punchy acidity, the finish deeply savoury. Powerful, yet simultaneously well proportioned, taut and seemingly only at the beginning of its unfurling. Profoundly good, as wines from this part of the world so often are. Matured for six months in older oak. Alc: 13.5%.

It will be facinating to compare 2023s -2024s and 2025 whites, Chenin Blancs and White Blends in a few years time. 2024s don’t have the Gras and dry extract but what they lack in weight and concentration, they more than make up with their linearity, tension, freshness and crystalline purity characteristics. One for the future.

I enjoyed a bottle of this scarce wine last week. If you are looking for those elusive characteristics that Greg shares above, it has them all in a tightly-wound wine that reminded me of a cold mountain stream. Faint hints of yellow fruit and a line of green fynbos, with that minerality which is so hard to describe! Wonderful Chenin Blanc.
