Bouchard Finlayson Galpin Peak Pinot Noir 2021

By , 3 February 2023

At 13.19%, the 2021 vintage of Galpin Peak Pinot Noir 2021 from Hemel en Aarde Valley  property Bouchard Finlayson is almost a degree lower in alcohol than 2020 – phenolic ripeness outperformed sugar accumulation in the berries as a result of dry and cool conditions in the lead-up to harvest.

Grapes from different clones and significantly different vine ages, maturation lasted 11 months in French oak, 30% new. The nose shows raspberry, strawberry, red cherry, a hint of musk, dried herbs, as well as vanilla and oak spice. The palate is relatively lean with lemon-like acidity. It has a vibrancy which is very much in its favour although the oak arguably sits apart at this stage. Price: R457 a bottle.

CE’s rating: 91/100.
