Kiara Scott Farmer, appointed winemaker at Paarl property Brookdale in 2019, leaves for a new position at Hazendal in Stellenbosch, with her current set of wines looking most impressive.
Sixteen Field Blend 2023
Price: R425
Grapes from a vineyard interplanted to 16 different varieties. 100% MLF. Matured for 12 months in concrete eggs and clay amophorae. Complex and enticing aromatics of citrus, peach, a hint of pineapple, flowers, fynbos and spice. The palate has presence and poise – excellent concentration, layers of flavour, well-integrated acidity and a gently savoury finish. Has a real tangy to it. Alc: 13%.

Bradbourne Field Blend 2023
Price: R385
38% Grenache Blanc, 25% Piquepoul Blanc, 25% Roussanne 25% and 12% Marsanne. A portion of the Grenache Blanc fermented whole-bunch for texture. 80% MLF. Matured for 12 months in barrel. A touch of reduction before lime, lemon and herbs on the nose. The palate is pleasantly lean with pure fruit, racy acidity and a pithy finish. Alc: 13%.

Brookdale Old Vine Chenin Blanc 2022
Price: R385
Grapes from a vineyard planted in 1985. Partial MLF. Matured for 11 months in 500-litre barrels, before a further 11 months in 2,000-litre foudre. Peach, apricot, soft citrus and orange plus yeasty complexity and earth on the nose. The palate is rich and forceful – dense fruit matched by snappy acidity, the finish intensely savoury. Alc: 13%.
