Buitenverwachting Hussey’s Vlei Sauvignon Blanc 2015

Opulent.

The 2015 vintage has generally been heralded as “near perfect” but I’m increasingly sceptical of the industry-wide practice of pronouncing on quality before anybody’s actually tasted any finished wine. How to compare to Constantia with Robertson? Why should a year that’s good for Sauvignon Blanc necessarily be good for Cabernet Sauvignon? These questions and more…

I was on the panel which tasted 234 examples of Sauvignon Blanc for the FNB Top 10 and my general impression is that while overall quality is good, it’s not always great. A vintage which was warm and early has very often produced wines packed with fruit but ever so slightly listless when it comes to acidities.

The Hussey’s Vlei Sauvignon Blanc from Buitenverwachting in Constantia is something of a benchmark so I was keen to try the 2015, available for R115.95 a bottle form Liquorcity Claremont. A floral top note before aromas of citrus through granadilla. Rich and seemingly sweet on the palate with a creamy texture and a tangy acidity. It’s certainly not lean and green but arguably could do with more zip – typical of the vintage.

#WinemagRating: 90/100.
