Cape Collective new releases
By Christian Eedes, 20 December 2021
Cape Collective – The Wrapper Series started as a 2020 lockdown export project by wine marketers Dane Raath and Janneman Solms and continues apace, the range recently winning silver in this year’s Label Design Awards. Various winemakers collaborate, one of them being Lucinda Heyns of Illimis Wines, new releases as put together by her as follows:
Cape Collective Seeboie Sauvignon Blanc 2021
90% Elgin Sauvignon Blanc, 10% Breedekloof Chenin Blanc. Very forward on the nose with notes of fruit punch and blackcurrant while the palate shows generous fruit and bright acidity – a super-cheerful quaffer.
CE’s rating: 88/100.
Cape Collective Epic White V 2.0
80% Swartland Chenin Blanc, 10% Jonkershoek Chenin Blanc and 10% white blend. Complex aromatics of stone fruit plus leesy, earthy notes while the palate is rich and broad with a creamy texture and well-integrated acidity, the finish gently savoury. Good depth and detail.
CE’s rating: 92/100.
Cape Collective Wit Mossel Riesling 2021
Darling Riesling, fermented in barrel. Hints of apple and spice on a generally shy nose while the palate is well balanced with clean, pure fruit and a nicely dry finish.
CE’s rating: 90/100.
Cape Collective Rad Red 2021
50% Cinsault from Darling, 30% Pinot Noir and 20% Pinotage, both from Stellenbosch. Very expressive on the nose with notes of red cherry, floral perfume and fresh herbs while the palate is light and energetic – pure fruit, bright acidity and powdery tannins, the finish long and dry. Serve chilled for excellent summer drinking.
CE’s rating: 93/100.
