The crux of the idea behind Cape Collective – the Wrapper Series is enclosing wine bottles in paper sheets  to keep packaging costs down while bright colours and strong typography ensure shelf-appeal is retained. Marketers Dane Raath and Janneman Solms collaborate with various prominent winemakers who usually remain undisclosed to bring various bottlings to market that are intended to over-deliver on quality relative to price. Tasting notes and ratings for the new releases as follows:

Cape Collective Mauve 2020
Price: R150
82% Syrah, 11% Grenache and 7% Cinsault sourced from various Stellenbosch and Swartland vineyards. Partial whole-bunch fermentation. Some floral perfume before red berries plus hints of pepper and spice on the nose while the palate is light and fresh with soft, supple tannins – immensely user friendly!

CE’s rating: 89/100.

Cape Collective Syrah 2020
Price: R180

Grapes from Bottelary Hills, Devon Valley and Polkadraai. Partial whole-bunch fermentation. The nose shows a hint of reduction before red and black berries, fynbos, violets and pepper. The palate has good depth of fruit, bright acidity and crunchy tannins. Full of flavour and nicely balanced.

CE’s rating: 91/100.

Cape Collective Cabernet Franc 2020
Price: R180

Grapes from Bottelary Hills and Polkadraai Hills. Red berries, tomato leaf and appealing herbal notes on the nose while the palate is elegant and harmonious – medium bodied with fresh acidity and fine tannins, the finish super-dry.

CE’s rating: 91/100.

Cape Collective Staunch Stellenbosch Cabernet Sauvignon 2018
Price: R250

Made by Bruwer Raats of Raats Family Wines. Red and black beries plus some leafiness on the nose while the palate is sweet, rich and full with luscious fruit and a smooth texture. This offers plushness rather than structure.

CE’s rating: 89/100.
