Wade Metzer has, over the years, built a reputation for meticulous craftsmanship, and his latest Syrah (R450) is a wine of both poise and presence. Grapes from two parcels high on the western slopes of the Helderberg, it underwent 30% whole-bunch fermentation before spending 11 months in large-format oak. The nose shows red berries, fynbos and white pepper. The palate offers impressive concentration, bright acidity and fine, powdery tannins. Succulent, even luscious, it combines generosity of fruit with admirable clarity. Alc: 13.8%.
