By , 21 February 2017

The Cape of Good Hope range from Anthonij Rupert Wyne has everything going for it on paper with grapes sourced from some of the choicest sites in the Cape and yet the wines seem to attract relatively little critical attention.

Cape of Good Hope Van Lill & Visser Chenin Blanc 2016

Model of discretion.

The Van Lill and Visser Chenin Blanc 2016 comes from Skurfberg, the name recognizing the two farmers who own and tend the 1964 vineyards in question.  In the cellar, 22% of the wine was fermented in 300-litre new French oak barrels, the rest in tank, maturation lasting seven months.

The wine currently appears extraordinarily primary. On the nose, a floral note before pear, white peach and talcum powder while he palate possesses a good core of fruit, fresh acidity and a pithy finish. Restraint is usually a good thing when it comes to wine but here you’re left wondering if the wine isn’t just a little underdone. Wine Cellar price: R140 a bottle.

Editor’s rating: 91/100.
