Charla Haasbroek new releases

Charla Bosman, winemaker Sijnn in Malgas since 2014, uses her maiden name Haasbroek for her own-label wines. She’s able to use the property’s grapes – no other wineries within a 100km radius – and this allows her to explore further explore the potential of this unique sit. Tasting notes and ratings for the new releases as follows:
Chenin Blanc 2022
Price: R275
Matured in an older 400-litre barrel for 10 months. Intense notes of mandarin and orange plus a slight nuttiness on the nose. The palate is very pure and direct – massive acidity (no malo-lactic fermentation before a saline finish. A wine that is striking in its linearity. Alc: 12.95%.

Prince of Peace Grenache Carignan 2022
Price: R325
A 50:50 blend of co-fermented Carignan and Grenache, 25% of the latter handled whole-bunch. Matured in 225-litre barrels for 11 months. The nose is very expressive with red berries, fynbos and floral perfume plus touches of earth and spice. The palate, meanwhile, shows lots of juicy fruit, zippy acidity and fine tannins – intensely flavoured with a markedly dry finish. Alc: 14.4%.
