City on a Hill Chenin Blanc 2017
By Christian Eedes, 11 August 2018
André Bruyns, assistant winemaker to David and Nadia Sadie of the Swartland, has expanded his range of own-label wines, a Chenin Blanc and a Muscat joining the established white blend. Tasting notes and ratings as follows:
City on a Hill White 2017
Wine Cellar price:R300
86% Chenin Blanc, 12% Viognier and 2% Muscat. A shy nose with the merest hints of cut apple, stone fruit, earth and spice. The palate is light bodied with tangy acidity and a gently savoury finish. Well balanced and very much a study in understatement.
Editor’s rating: 90/100.
City on a Hill Chenin Blanc 2017
Approximate retail price: R380
Grapes from three Paardeberg vineyards. A hint of reduction before pear, white peach and citrus plus notes of hay and earth in the background. Lovely fruit definition and snappy acidity before a salty finish. Pure and direct.
Editor’s rating: 93/100.
City on a Hill Muscat d’ Alexandrie 2017
Approximate retail price: R285
From a vineyard planted in the mid-1980s. The nose has a lovely grapey quality along with touch of reduction and a subtle herbaceous quality – think bay leaf. Juicy and fresh with a saline-like finish, this is super-sexy if not hugely complex. Alcohol: 11%.
Editor’s rating: 89/100.
