Colmant Brut Chardonnay NV
By Christian Eedes, 16 August 2018
Colmant Cap Classique & Champagne, the Franschhoek business run by Belgian Jean-Philippe Colmant, is celebrating 10 years since the maiden release of a wine under the Colmant label, a Brut from the 2006 harvest.
The stand-out wine in the portfolio remains the Colmant Brut Chardonnay NV, grapes from own Franschhoek vineyards plus Elgin and Robertson, a small portion barrel fermented, current release mainly from the 2013 vintage but including 10% reserve wine, 45 months on the lees.
The nose is particularly complex with a top note of blossom before citrus, apple, some yeasty complexity and a little earthiness. The palate is rich and layered but not short of freshness – very good fruit definition and a creamy mousse. Always one of SA’s most accomplished bubblies. Price: R240 a bottle.
Editor’s rating: 91/100.
New to the range is Absolu Zero Dosage NV. From Chardonnay, this spent 85 months on the lees and is one for category aficionados. The nose shows top notes of blossom and herbs before pear and citrus. The palate is lean, the acidity particularly brisk as you might expect– pure fruit and a fine mousse before a long, dry finish. Total production: 450 bottles. Price: R480 a bottle.
Editor’s rating: 90/100.
