Colombo new releases

By , 17 July 2026

Daniel Colombo, champion of alternative varieties, says he’s not inclined to waste time on trivial tasks when it comes to winemaking. “My approach is hands off. I prefer to trust the process. I’m not a faffer”. The latest releases bear that out, relying on site and fruit character rather than cellar artifice.

Agape Palomino 2025
Price: R300

From a Piekenierskloof vineyard planted in 1976. Matured for 10 months in older 500-litre barrels.  Aromatics of hay, wild flowers, herbs, pear, apple, citrus and a subtle lees-derived complexity. The palate is concentrated without excess weight, the creamy texture offset by well-integrated acidity. For a variety that is often quite neutral and light-bodied, this is surprisingly expressive, combining depth with remarkable poise. Alc: 12.5%.

Can’t Do Without You Colombar 2025
Price: R300

From a Paarl vineyard planted in 1988. Vinified as above. The nose is understated with hints of peach and dried herbs. The palate is lean with fresh acidity and a pithy finish. Taut and direct, rewarding attention rather than demanding it. Alc: 12.5%.

There’s Something About You Muscat d’Alexandrie 2025
Price: R300

From an own-rooted Skurfberg vineyard planted in the early 20th century. Three separate pickings, each receiving different periods of skin contact before maturation in a 2,000-litre foudre. Compelling aromatics of quince, grapefruit, orange, potpourri, herbs and a hint of ginger. The palate combines clarity of fruit with an exhilarating line of acidity and just enough phenolic grip to lend shape. Intensely flavoured with a finish of remarkable persistence. Alc: 12%.

CE’s rating: 95 | Distinctive
