Columella 2018
By Christian Eedes, 27 October 2020
The 2018 vintage of Columella is simply scintillating. A multi-vineyard, multi-varietal wine, the presence of Syrah is now down to approximately 45% while the other components are Carignan, Cinsault, Grenach, Mourvedre and Tinta Barocca, the idea being that all the grapes of the district should be represented.
The nose is very expressive with notes of lavender, pomegranate, red cherry, raspberry and blackberry, olive, earth and spice while the palate has great density of fruit without sacrificing energy – pure, fresh and nicely grippy on the finish. And to think that this was achieved with the drought wearing on and on. Price: R920 a bottle.
CE’s rating: 97/100.
