Crystallum new releases

By , 18 April 2023

The Crystallum project sees winemaker Peter-Allan Finlayson specialising in the Burgundian varieties, the range underpinned by two multi-origin bottlings, these being The Agnes Chardonnay and Peter Max Pinot Noir. Tasting notes and ratings for the new releases as follows:

Crystallum The Agnes Chardonnay 2022
Price: R300
60% grapes from Shaw’s Mountain (Overberg), 20% Ceres Plateau and 20% Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge. A top note of floral perfume before citrus and oatmeal on the nose. The palate is nicely balanced with good fruit expression and snappy acidity. True to the variety and thoroughly approachable. Total production: 62 barrels, all older oak. Alc: 12.8%.

CE’s rating: 91/100.

Crystallum Peter Max Pinot Noir 2022
Price: R350
Grapes from Elandskloof, Hemel en Aarde Ridge and Overberg. Red and black cherry, fynbos and musk. The palate shows clean fruit, zippy acidity and fine yet nicely grippy tannins, the finish long and dry. That much more lively and better structured than 2021. Total production: 114 barrels. Alc: 13.5%.

CE’s rating: 91/100.
