Dalla Cia 10 Year Celebration Grappa
By Christian Eedes, 23 September 2015
A 10 year old Grappa released to mark the 10th anniversary of the Dalla Cia Wine & Spirit Company and it’s a “liquid luxury good” if ever there was one. From a blend of two-thirds Cabernet Sauvignon and one-third Merlot, it was distilled in 2004 and left to mature in in new 225-litre French oak barrels for a decade. The initial release is just 1 000 bottles, 500ml in size, selling for R2 325 per bottle from the Dalla Cia food and wine bar Pane e Vino in Stellenbosch.
Not much berry fruit remains after ten years in oak but it’s complex and delicious even so. There are notes of vanilla, spice and a certain smokiness but also orange rind and ginger on the nose. The palate is sweet, thick textured and not too fiery – most satisfying.
