David Finlayson Camino Africana Chenin Blanc 2015

Built.

The 2015 vintage of Camino Africana Chenin Blanc from David Finlayson (approximate retail price: R230 a bottle) is a curious wine, notably bigger and more oxidative than previous vintages.

Grapes from a vineyard on Kaapzicht planted in 1947 and thought to be the second oldest in the country, it was spontaneously fermented and matured for 11 months in new oak. It’s a somewhat disconcerting straw yellow in colour while the nose is very yeasty indeed although there are also notes of cut apple, spanspek and some nuttiness. The palate is rich and broad, plush textured, the acidity nicely coated. Not as acutely observed as the 2014 (see here).

#WinemagRating: 90/100.
