David & Nadia new releases

By , 12 June 2017

It’s becoming clear that winemakers needed to be particularly shrewd in hot and dry 2016, a vintage with very little room for error. Get it right, however, and the resulting wines are particularly striking. Tasting notes and ratings for the new releases from Swartland husband-and-wife team David and Nadia Sadie as follows:

David & Nadia Chenin Blanc 2016
Price: R315
From six different vineyards ranging from 39 to 45 years old. Pear, peach, floral fragrance and some gravel road dustiness on the nose. Concentrated fruit and fresh acidity. Lovely presence and poise. Seamlessly assembled.

Editor’s rating: 94/100.

David & Nadia Aristargos 2016

Too sexy.

David & Naida Aristargos 2016
Price: R315
50% Chenin Blanc, 20% Viognier, 12% Roussanne, 10% Semillon, 8% Clairette Blanche. Very expressive on the nose with notes of pear, peach and orange plus some marzipan and a little earthiness. The palate is extraordinarily layered – the flavours come in waves and wave. Soft but sufficient acidity, the finish long and spicy.

Editor’s rating: 96/100.

David & Nadia Grenache 2016
Price: R315
Red fruit, scrub, earth, white pepper and spice on the nose. Richer and fuller than previous vintages. Upfront fruit, moderate acidity and quite firm tannins. Relatively chunky, this no doubt a product of the vintage.

Editor’s rating: 92/100.

David & Nadia Elpidios 2015
Price: R315
39% Carignan, 3% Syrah, 16% Pinotage, 9% Cinsaut and 5% Grenache. Cherries, plums, earth and just a hint of reduction which adds rather than detracts. Rich and full with fresh acidity and firm tannins. Intensely flavoured and wonderfully long on the finish. Always a somewhat idiosyncratic wine, this is the best realised vintage to date.

Editor’s rating: 93/100.
