David & Nadia Old Bush Vines Authentic Series 2016
By Christian Eedes, 11 September 2017
The 2016 vintage marks the third time these single-vineyard wines from David and Nadia Sadie have been made and seem to get more accomplished each year.
Hoë-Steen Chenin Blanc 2016
Price: R550 a bottle
From a 1968 vineyard planted on mixed soils between Malmesbury and Darling. A haunting nose of pear, white peach, dried herbs and just a hint of reduction. The palate is intensely flavoured with a great line of acidity and a saline finish. Tightly wound but not entirely without texture, understated and very sophisticated, it should make for rewarding drinking for many years to come.
Editor’s rating: 97/100.
Skaliekop Chenin Blanc 2016
Price: R550
From a shale vineyard planted in 1985 on Paardebosch. Naartjie and yellow peach plus some yeasty complexity on the nose. The palate is relatively rich and broad with well integrated acidity. A wine of great presence and composure.
Editor’s rating: 95/100.
