De Trafford Chenin Blanc 2014

Dope.

When David Trafford of Stellenbosch cellar DeTrafford gets it right, he really gets it right as is the case with his Chenin Blanc 2014.

Grapes from two blocks: 30-year-old bush vines on the Helderberg and eight-year-old trellised vines on Keermont; bunch and berry size a little larger than usual due to higher rain and less wind than usual during growing season resulting in a little lesss concentrated, more delicate style according to the De Trafford website. Fermentation occurred spontaneously and maturation lasted nine months in a combination of 225-litre and 700-litre barrels, 15% new.

The nose shows yellow peach, apricot and even pineapple plus ginger, spice and a little leesy complexity. The palate is rich and full (despite official protestations to the contrary) with concentrated fruit, coated acidity and an intensely savoury finish. The wine has an essential, unadulterated feel about it and basically completely rocks. Wine Cellar price: R220 a bottle.

#WinemagRating: 94/100.
