De Trafford Elevation 393 2017

By , 2 July 2024

Grapes for the De Trafford Elevation 393 come from a vineyard on David and Rita Trafford’s Helderberg property called Mont Fleur planted 393m above sea level and hence the name.

The newly released 2017 is a blend of 42% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot, 14% Cabernet Franc and 12% Syrah, components matured separately for nine months before the blend was made up, the wine returned to barrel for a further 10 months, mostly new oak used.

The nose initially shows black and blue fruit, malt, earth, liquorice, cloves, cinnamon and pepper but more red fruit and floral perfume emerges with time in glass while the palate is dense and smooth textured (alc: 14.4%). It’s a hearty, multidimensional wine with layers of flavour and a gently savoury finish. Price: R1,300 a bottle.

CE’s rating: 92/100.
