Delaire Graff Banghoek Reserve Merlot 2021

By , 8 March 2024

Merlot is generally considered difficult to work with under local conditions but the 2014 from Stellenbosch property Delaire Graff was one of the top performers in the recent 10-Year-Old Wine Report, rating 93 points.

What of the currently available 2021? Grapes from the oldest single block on the farm planted in 1999, it has an abv  of 14.98% and got the full treatment in the cellar – left on the skins some six weeks post ferment before maturation lasting 16 months in barrel, 70% new – and yet it’s still a lively, even pretty wine.

Red and black berries, olive and floral perfume on the nose while the palate shows pure fruit, fresh acidity and fine tannins. Well balanced with a dry finish, it carries its alcohol well. Price: R600 a bottle.

CE’s rating: 92/100.
