Delaire Graff in Stellenbosch has long had a Cape Bordeaux red blend in the form of the Cab-driven Botmaskop, the current-release 2017 selling for R295 a bottle, and this is now joined by The Banghoek, maiden release 2016 consisting of 53% Cabernet Franc, 35% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Petit Verdot and 3% Malbec, maturation lasting 16 months in French oak, 60% new.
It’s a superbly crafted effort. The nose shows red and black fruit, floral perfume and attractive notes of vanilla and spice while the palate is full bodied but wonderfully well balanced. Great depth of fruit and plenty of structure, this is a luxurious wine which impresses more and more with each sip. Price: R1 800 a bottle.

I tasted this at the TA evening in Cape Town, and absolutely loved it. To me it was in a different division to the Bosmanskop. However, it’s too dear for me. My overwhelming feeling is that it’s such a pity that it isn’t competitively priced for the local market (but perhaps that’s just me being selfish).

They can take their R1800 bottle of Stellenbosch wine and shove it way up. I can drink up in quality from that effort for a 3rd or even a quarter of the price. From the same area with a stronger track record. Sorry.

I can’t agree more Carlos. I am buying great Bordeaux as well for less than R700
Delaire Graff seems to think they have the pedigree of Lafleur Petrus or Clos Fourtet or Angelus. What a joke.
But you know what they don’t care because they are some suckers staying there for 15K a night who will happily order this wine from their restaurant.
