Delheim Vera Cruz Pinotage 2012

Dead sexy.

Dead sexy.

Stellenbosch cellar Delheim recently released a maiden Pinotage 2012 (R310 a bottle) to its flagship Vera Cruz range, the wine having already earned the accolade of placing among the 2014 ABSA Top Ten winners.

Grapes come from a 18-year-old bushvine block on the Vera Cruz property about three kilometres from Delheim, this land acquired by Delheim patriarch Spatz Sperling in 1975 in order to compete with the country’s other “super reds”. 16 months in oak, 45% new.

It’s Cinsaut on steroids. Red cherries, plums, cinnamon and subtle vanilla. Relatively medium bodied despite an abv of 14.5% with fresh acidity and surprisingly soft and supple tannins – it has structure but isn’t nearly imposing as some ultra-premium examples of Pinotage. Really well balanced – no rough edges but equally not too polished. A top drop.

Score: 90/100.
