DeMorgenzon The Divas Chenin Blanc 2020
By Christian Eedes, 28 October 2021
4
This is the fourth vintage of the limited edition The Divas from Stellenbosch property DeMorgenzon, previous releases being 2013 and 2017, grapes sourced from a 1972 block that usually supplies the Reserve.
Fermented and matured in 300-litre barrels of which 40% were new for around seven months before a further seven months in concrete egg, it’s a striking wine. Smoky reduction before citrus, peach, dried herbs, spice and some leesy character on the nose while the palate is mouth-filling but not unctuous – great fruit definition and vibrant acidity before a dry finish. Lots of flavour and nice texture. Price: R1 000 a bottle.
CE’s rating: 95/100.

At this price I buy Nicolas Joly Coulee de Serrant blindly and enjoy.

Alastair Rimmer from ex-Kleine Zalze is the new Cellar Master at DMZ now but I would also be very curious to know if the 2020 was actually made by Adam Mason and just finished off by Alastair?

Current DeMorgenzon winemaker Alastair Rimmer readily credits Carl van der Merwe as winemaker for the 2020 vintage – Adam Mason joined in May 2020 and Rimmer joined in June 2021 so who knows who saw it into bottle?

CHristian – who’s the winemaker that made this and who is the current winemaker at DMZ?
