Donkiesbaai is a brand started by Jean Engelbrecht of Rust en Vrede fame, the name taken from a family holiday spot on the West Coast.
Grapes for Piekenierskloof, winemaking involved 75% maturation in 500-litre barrels, partially new, and 25% in concrete eggs.
Peach, hay and herbs on the nose before a palate that shows concentrated fruit, bright acidity and a salty finish (alc: 13.11%). It’s a precisely made wine with nice weight and balance – some might say a bit safe. Price: R320 a bottle.
