Philip van Staden, previously of Guardian Peak, has been winemaker at Dornier in Stellenbosch since October 2015 and the range is being submitted to an ongoing process of refinement. Among the current-releases, the following are particularly impressive:
Dornier Donatus White 2016
Price: R195
80% Chenin Blanc, 20% Semillon. Matured for 10 months in French oak, 20% new. A top note of hay before lime, peach and a little earthiness. The palate is rich but balanced, the wine possessing a lovely line of acidity, the finish gently savoury.
Editor’s rating: 93/100.
Dornier Siren Syrah 2015
Price: R142
Grapes sourced from a vineyard on the Simonsberg. Matured for 12 months in mainly older French oak. A compelling nose of red and black fruit, scrub and intense pepper. With striking fruit purity, fresh acidity and nicely grippy tannins, this is one of the finest examples of Syrah from Stellenbosch tasted recently.
Editor’s rating: 95/100.

As a wine lover, one is often faced with really difficult purchasing decisions. Like, do I drop R426 on three 95-point wines, or do I sell my car and drop R15 000 on three 93-point wines?

Obviously not making the wines any more, but well done Jeanine Craven on the Syrah! 🙂

does that mean it could possibly be a one-off?
Christian | 23 November 2017
Hi Hennie, I’m happy to report that the 2016 as made by Van Staden is in bottle and looks very promising.

Dear Mr Snashall,
