Harold Versfeld, previously winemaker at Val de Vie in Paarl, is now in partnership with Hong Kong-based trust and tax consultant Howard Bilton, their undertaking known as Dromer Wines. Tasting notes and ratings for current releases as follows:

Dromer White 2015

Dream catcher.

Dromer White 2015
Price: R150
57% Sauvignon Blanc, 43% Semillon. Sauvignon Blanc is from my family farm in the Groenekloof ward in Darling and the Semillon from Bot River. 85% of the Sauvignon was tank fermented, 15% underwent spontaneous ferment in third-fill barrels, the Semillon fermented in 500-litre barrels.

The nose is very forthcoming with notes of lime, peach, apple and green melon plus fynbos and a certain leafiness you might associate with Cabernet Sauvignon. The palate is rich and thick textured with some white pepper bite on the finish. Nice push and pull between the Sauvignon and the Sem.

#WinemagRating: 90/100.

Dromer Red 2012
Price: R200
52% Merlot, 30% Cabernet  Sauvignon and 18% Cabernet Franc. Grapes from various sites in Stellenbosch and Elgin. 40% new oak. The nose shows more red than black fruit, subtle notes of mint and chocolate plus the beginning of some forestfloor character. The palate is medium bodied and already quite mellow. Admirably understated and drinking well right now.

#WinemagRating: 87/100.
