Eikendal Pinotage 2014

Schweet.

The Pinotage 2014 from Eikendal in Stellenbosch is another example of the new style which is emerging being fruit-forward and showing restrained use of oak – the juice was spontaneously fermented (including a 10% portion whole bunch), maturation lasting 12 months in second and third-fill 500-litre barrels.

On the nose, there is a floral top note before cherries, plums and a hint of banana plus a little spice. The palate shows plenty of fruit, good freshness and soft tannins. It comes across as quite sweet (alcohol is 14.5% and RS is 2.8g/l) but then that is the nature of the grape and on the whole there is plenty to like here. Price: R100 a bottle.

#WinemagRating: 90/100.
