Esona Single Vineyard Shiraz 2013
By Christian Eedes, 25 January 2017
Rowan and Caryl Beattie, owners of the property Esona situated between Robertson and Bonnievale, have an interesting approach to sales in that they retain stocks of various vintages enabling customers to compare and contrast. They feel their wines from the 2013 vintage (made by Lourens van der Westuhuizen of nearby Arendsig) are showing particularly well right now and were keen for us to try them, tasting notes and ratings as follows:
Esona Single Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc 2013
Price: R72
Green bean, lime and Granny Smith apple. Clean and fresh on the palate with a pithy finish. A bit severe but still very much alive.
#WinemagRating: 87/100.
Esona Single Vineyard Chardonnay 2013
Price: R102
Lemon and orange, biscuit and honey plus some funky leesy character on the nose and palate. Medium bodied with moderate acidity – sweet upfront but savoury on the finish.
#WinemagRating: 86/100.
Esona Shiraz 2013
Price: R116
An expressive nose of red and black fruit, some floral fragrance plus pepper and spice. Full bodied but balanced – concentrated fruit, fresh acidity and tannins which are soft in the best sense. Plenty of grunt.
#WinemagRating: 88/100
