Excelsior Evanthuis Cabernet Sauvignon 2013

Horsepower.

Robertson property Excelsior is both wine farm and thoroughbred stud, the reserve range bearing names of famous horses. Of the 220ha under vineyard, Cabernet Sauvignon is the most planted variety and the Evanthius Cabernet Sauvignon 2013 comes from a 1988 block, the oldest on the farm.

Matured for 20 months in French oak, 50% new, this is a wine not to be trifled with. The nose shows a hint of reduction before cassis, violets and herbs, a slight note of undergrowth also in evidence. The palate is full bodied with dense fruit, fresh acidity and firm tannins, the finish long and savoury. Well balanced, this still has a way to go. Price: R156 a bottle.

Editor’s rating: 91/100.
