Fairview Broken Barrel Pinotage Durif 2019

Fairview Broken Barrel 2019 won silver at last year’s Label Design Awards, the front of the bottle featuring local viticulturist Dr Abraham Perold and French botanist Dr Francois Durif. The wine is a rather unusual blend of Pinotage and Durif, and it was of course Perold who was responsible for crossing Pinot Noir with Cinsaut to create Pinotage while Durif came up with Durif by crossing Syrah with Peloursin.

At R125 a bottle, Broken Bottle 2019 offers satisfying everyday drinking. With the Pinotage sourced from the Swartland and the Durif from Paarl, maturation lasted 24 months in French and American oak, 20% new. The nose shows plums, cherries and black berries plus incense, vanilla and spice while the palate has lots of fruit richness and soft tannins without being too vulgar or sweet.
