Fairview The Grenaches
By Christian Eedes, 18 January 2019
Sommelier-at-large Higgo Jacobs has collaborated with Fairview to produce The Grenaches, a Blanc and a Noir, tasting notes and ratings as follows:
Fairview Grenache Blanc 2018
Approximate retail price: R180
From Piekenierskloof grapes. Fermented and matured in tank for three months before half was moved to older French oak barrels for a further three months. The nose shows a top note of hay before pear through peach to pineapple. The palate has a nice texture about it to go with lemon-like acidity, the finish long and dry – delicious! Alcohol: 13.65%. Also available in bag-in-box.
Editor’s rating: 90/100.
Fairview Grenache Noir 2018
Approximate retail price: R180
Grapes from Paarl and Piekenierskloof. Fermented in foudre, 20% whole-bunch before maturation in older French oak barrels. Some reduction before red cherry, earth and spice. The palate is light-bodied with clean fruit and fresh acidity and fine tannins, a certain saltiness to the finish. Perhaps a bit underdone (alcohol: 13.5%). Also available in bag-in-box.
Editor’s rating: 88/100.
