Flower Girl Albariño 2023

By , 2 August 2024

What might Albariño, the aromatic, high-acidity white variety associated with Rías Baixas in north-west Spain, do under local conditions? There were 32ha planted at the end of last year, prominent producers working with it being Boplaas, Kleine Zalze, Newton Johnson and Springfield.

Ginny Povall of Botanica got in on the act when she grafted a block of her Cabernet Sauvignon over to Albariño in 2018. The 2023 (price: R220 a bottle) is unoaked, the nose showing lemon, peach and apple plus a hint of reduction while the palate has great clarity and concentration of fruit and snappy acidity. Not too linear, the finish dry. Alc: 12.9%.

CE’s rating: 92/100.
